The Broadway was a mid-level department store chain headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1896 by English born Arthur Letts, Sr., who later went on to develop Holmby Hills, The Broadway became one of the dominant retailers in Southern California and the Southwest. In 1950, it merged with Sacramento based Hale Brothers (Weinstock's) to form Broadway-Hale Stores.
The Broadway bought out competitors in Los Angeles (B.H. Dyas, Milliron's, and Coulter's), San Diego (Marston's), and Phoenix (Korrick's). In later years The Broadway opened stores in Nevada (Las Vegas), New Mexico, and Colorado. They also purchased San Francisco based Emporium-Capwell in 1969. Like Weinstock's, Emporium-Capwell stores all opertaed under their respective names until 1996.
In 1979 Broadway was split into two divisions: The Broadway Southern California, based in Los Angeles; and Broadway Southwest, headquartered in Phoenix (for the non-California stores). Broadway's parent Carter Hawley Hale Stores ran into financial difficulties which resulted from poor management decisions and hostile takeover attempts. In 1996 the chain was acquired by Federated Department Stores and the majority of locations were converted to the Macy's nameplate. Several stores in affluent areas where Macy's already had locations were closed, refurbished and reopened as Bloomingdale's, while Federated sold many of the remaining stores to Sears.

Phoenix - Biltmore Fashion Park Opened 1968 - Became Macy's in 1996.

Phoenix - Christown Mall Opened 1961 - Closed in 1992 - torn down in 1994 for Walmart.

The Christown store opened in 1961 as Korrick's and became The Broadway in 1966.

Phoenix - Metrocenter Mall Opened 1974 - Became Macy's in 1996 - Closed in 2005 after Federated bought May Department Stores.

Phoenix - Paradise Valley Mall Opened 1991 - Became Macy's in 1996 - Closed in 2006 after Federated bought May Department Stores.

The Paradise Valley store was the last new Broadway store to open before the Federated purchase in 1996. It is reported that this store has been torn down to build a Costco.

Hawthorne - Hawthorne Plaza Opened 1977 - Closed in 1998

The Hawthorne Plaza store became "The Broadway – A Macy’s outlet" and was closed in 1998 have never been resigned. Currently still vacant.

Los Angeles (Baldwin Hills) - Baldwin Hills Plaza Opened 1947 - Closed in 1999 - Now Walmart.

In 1996 the Baldwin Hills store became a Macy's and was closed in 1999. It sat vacant for several years before becoming Wal Mart.

Los Angeles (Westchester) - Sepulveda Boulevard Opened 1948 - Closed in 1988.

Broadway Westchester opened in 1948 as Milliron's and was later bought by The Broadway. It became Mervyn's in 1988 and is scheduled to became Khol's after Mervyn's closed in 2008.
